Indian Head Massage/ Champissage - (30 mins)
Indian Head Massage has been practiced in India for over 1000 years, originating from the ancient teachings of Ayurvedic healing. Many children in India still grow up with head massage being part of their daily lives. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could restore this practice here?
Women would traditionally (and still do) massage natural vegetable oils into the head of other family members to keep the scalp healthy and hair strong and lustrous and barbers would include a head massage when people visited for a wet shave or hair cut in order to stimulate and invigorate blood flow to the scalp.
When Indian Head Massage was bought over to the west, the traditional techniques used on the scalp were extended to neck, shoulders, upper back and arms, and in some cases the face.
It is a blissful and relaxing treatment, renowned for relieving the symptoms of stress and may also benefit in the following ways:
-
Promoting healthy hair growth - stimulates the flow of nutrient-rich blood to the hair follicles which is often restricted by stress-generated muscle tension. It can therefore be helpful in cases of alopecia
-
Improving the condition of hair
-
Improving circulation and lymphatic drainage
-
Relieving tension held in the neck, shoulders and jaws
-
Relieving symptoms of sinusitis, head colds, migraines and headaches
-
Helping to relieve eyestrain and mental tiredness
-
Improving concentration and clear thinking
-
Promoting sleep and helping with insomnia
-
Relieving emotional tension and anxiety whilst promoting a sense of calm
-
Chakra balancing
-
Stimulating the breakdown and release of toxins trapped in tense, knotted muscles
Whilst traditionally in India, people would have likely sat on the floor to receive their daily head massage, I offer treatments either from a chair so long at the back is no higher than the shoulder blades, or from a massage couch if the treatment is being combined with a body massage or reflexology as well. This makes it an extremely versatile treatment and so is ideal way to take a short break during your day.
